The Secret To Improving Energy Savings? Look At Every Room In Your Home

If you’d like to conserve energy and save money, you have a lot of options. Every area in your home has the potential to waste energy. This means that, in order to maximize your savings, you will have to look at your house room by room.

Kitchen and bathroom

  • Repair leaky faucets.
  • Don’t run your dishwasher until you have a full load of dishes, and avoid using the special cycles.
  • Avoid running the vent fans in your kitchen and bathroom any more than necessary. The kitchen fan should be use while you cook on the stove, and the bathroom fan can be run for a few minutes after you shower.
  • Choose an energy-efficient refrigerator. Avoid side-by-side models and freezers with a built-in ice maker.
  • Install low-flow faucets and showerheads, and take shorter showers.

Living room and bedroom

  • Unplug electronics, appliances and battery chargers when not in use, or use a power strip as a central turn-off point. Most electronics use power as long as they’re plugged in, even if they’re not on.
  • Make sure all your heating and cooling registers are open and not blocked by furniture.
  • Regularly change your air conditioner filters during the cooling season.
  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with more efficient fluorescent bulbs.
  • Install a programmable thermostat.

Attic and basement

  • Make sure your attic is well-insulated and free of air leaks. Because it’s located at the top of your house, this room has the greatest potential for heat loss.
  • Set your water heater’s thermostat no higher than 120 degrees.
  • Have your furnace or boiler serviced annually. If you have a furnace, make sure it always has clean filters during the heating season.
  • If you have a washer and dryer, wait until you have a full load before you wash your clothes. Run the washing machine with cold water, and dry your clothes out on a clothesline when the weather permits.
  • Seal gaps around vents, pipes, wires and foundations.
