Tankless Water Heaters: Need Two, Or Will One Do?

Once you’ve decided to replace your storage water heater with a tankless model, you’ll have to determine if one will be enough or if two tankless water heaters would meet your hot water needs more adequately. According to Energy Savers, a typical tankless heater can deliver two to five gallons per minute. While small households are likely to have plenty of hot water with just one heater, larger households may need two to keep up with laundry, dishwashing and showers on a daily basis.

You can figure out the demand for hot water in your home by estimating how much you need at peak times so that you have plenty of hot water. The water efficiency of your plumbing makes a difference in how many tankless water heaters that you need. If your home was built before 1992, you may have faucets and showerheads that use more than 2.5 gallons per minute, the current standard for residential plumbing fixtures.

If you’re in doubt about the rate your water flows, place a bucket below the showerhead, turn on the water to the flow you normally use and time how long it takes to reach the gallon mark. If it takes less than 20 seconds to reach the gallon mark, consider replacing your plumbing fixtures to lower the flow rate, and your demand for hot water. Considering that you’ll be saving water throughout the year and eliminating the need for a second tankless system, the money you spend to update your fixtures will pay off fast.

However, there are times when additional tankless water heaters make sense. If you have a bathroom far from the water heater, it makes sense to put a compact heater under the vanity. You may also want to use a booster system for a dishwasher, or even a hot tub outdoors. When you use a booster system, you can set the temperature of the main water heater lower, saving energy dollars.
