Holding Down Energy Loss In Your Ductwork

Most homeowners do not give their ductwork a second thought until their energy bills begin to rise. Inadequately insulated duct or duct leaks will lose up to 30 percent of the energy used to cool or heat your home. Inefficient duct design will also waste energy. As a homeowner, there are a few areas you can examine for energy loss.

Duct design

  • Inspect the size of the duct for sufficient airflow to each room. If you have a concern, a trained technician will determine if you have adequate airflow to each room.
  • Look for a supply register and a return grille in each room to balance the airflow to and from the room. These should be in an opened area, not blocked by furniture.

  • Examine ductwork for leaky joints especially in unconditioned areas such as attics and crawl spaces.
  • Hangers holding up ductwork can loosen, causing ducts to sag and the joints to separate, and creating leaks that lose valuable energy.
  • Look for dry rot or cracked duct tape, foil tape, caulking or duct sealer at the duct joints.
  • Check the volume dampers in the duct. Incorrectly set or closed dampers will restrict the flow of air and your heating and cooling system will use more energy to condition the room.
  • Look for excess dirt in your duct, which will block filters and cause your heating or cooling system to work harder.

  • Insulation helps retain the temperature of the air flowing through the duct and prevents additional heat loss.
  • Inspect your insulation for defects. Look under the insulation at the duct for hidden leaks, which could go unnoticed for years.
  • Check that the insulation is wrapped securely around the duct. Look for any gaps or openings.
  • Insulate any ductwork running though unconditioned attics, crawl spaces or garages.
